Ontario native Simon Sheppard has emerged in recent years as a standout Silk artist, with a style that can only be described as "vintage" progressive. Silk Digital is proud to present his first full EP with Silk, which includes three deeply intricate, "storytelling" peak-hour bombs.
The title cut, "Space Walk", follows in a long genre tradition of celestially-inspired progressive tunes. In fact, this one also includes the distorted radio feed of an astronaut seemingly contacting NASA Headquarters, another longstanding convention. The track begins with a rolling, peak-hour beat, punctuated by hypnotic, "tribal" tom-toms. Gorgeous, heavily-filtered pads, coupled with other astronomical effects soon follow, while a Jaytech-influenced vocal sample provides additional melodic textures. In the main break, this repeating motif is reinforced by stunning arps, which soar above deep pads.
Next up is "London Smack", a moody and evocative "underground" prog anthem-in-the-making. Again, the deep, pensive atmosphere is established early by great pad work, as well as a variety of heavily processed vox samples. There is also a groovy, rolling bassline, which lends the track a great rhythmic swing and after-hours sensibility.
Finally, "Arcane" (2012 Mix) is a more light-hearted, buoyant, and melodic offering, centered on a dynamic bassline groove and a variety of dancing arps. The energy crescendoes, leading into the main break, which offers a truly "transporting", exotic soundscape. Numerous pad layers give the song a distant, "Heart of Darkness-esque" atmosphere, as the mesmerizing lead arp continues to cut through the mid-range.
